The role of Administrative Officers in the civil service can be varied. The Administrative Officer grade is the main graduate recruitment grade for the civil service. This entry grade allows candidates to progress to middle management. Administrative officers can be assigned a wide variety of duties and have a key role in policy and strategy formulation across the spectrum of economic, financial, international, environmental and social issues.

A wide range of skills are sought after for these positions and areas that Administrative Officers may be engaged in include; critical analysis, policy formation and drafting as well as research. Attention to detail, strong administration skills as well as strategic thinking are important traits for this role.
