Selection Process

Approximately only 1 in 6 Garda candidates that apply are successful – Be one of them with us!

Applicants are initially invited to complete a series of online aptitude tests and assessments, which are remotely proctored and can be taken from home on a laptop or PC. Success in Stage 1 is essential to advance in the Garda recruitment process. Our extensive experience and expertise in Garda psychometric testing are unparalleled.

Assessment Questionnaire

This initial component gathers comprehensive information about your skills, abilities, and preferences. It presents a series of statements related to various work-related scenarios and personal attributes, requiring you to reflect on your experiences and indicate the degree to which each statement applies to you. This helps to build a detailed profile aligning your characteristics with the competencies expected of a Garda Trainee.

Situational Judgment / Job Simulation

In this section, you’ll encounter scenario-based questions that mirror real-life situations a Trainee Garda might face. These exercises assess your judgment, decision-making, and prioritisation skills under pressure. After reviewing each scenario, you’ll select the most appropriate course of action from multiple options.

Verbal Reasoning

This test measures your ability to comprehend and analyze written information. You’ll read various passages and answer questions that assess your understanding and logical evaluation of the content. This exercise evaluates your reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, essential for effective communication and information processing.

Numerical Reasoning

This assessment focuses on your capacity to interpret and analyse numerical data, such as graphs, tables, and calculations. You’ll be tasked with solving problems that require basic mathematical skills, including percentages, ratios, and data interpretation.

Written Exercise

This exercise evaluates your ability to communicate effectively in writing, as well as your judgment and decision-making skills in a policing scenario. You’ll be presented with information related to a specific situation and asked to provide a written response.

Each of these assessments plays a vital role in determining your suitability for a career with An Garda Síochána. Your performance in Stage 1 directly influences your progression to the next phase—the Competency-Based Interview—making thorough preparation indispensable for success.
