About the ESB Apprenticeship Programme
The ESB Apprenticeship Offers:
The ESB offers one of Ireland’s leading electrical apprenticeship programmes, combining:

Recruitment usually begins in Spring, with successful candidates starting training in Autumn. For full details, candidates should always refer to the official ESB website.
Do You Need to Prepare?
The ESB Apprenticeship is highly competitive, with large numbers of applicants competing for a limited number of places.
Applicants must complete:
- An online application
- Online aptitude tests
- A structured interview
Based on previous campaigns, eligible applicants typically receive only a few days to complete their aptitude tests once ESB sends the invitation email.
This is why many candidates choose to prepare in advance, before submitting their application.

- Aptitude test preparation (Verbal, Numerical, Mechanical etc.)

You receive 12 months of instant, unlimited access, offering long-term value and transferable skills.
IMPORTANT: When applications open, ESB requires candidates to complete online assessments, usually within 3–5 days of receiving the test link. This is usually issued soon after you apply. To avoid time pressure, if doing our preparation course, we strongly recommend completing your preparation before submitting your ESB application. Our courses are optional and open to anyone.

(minimum age 17)
Educational Qualifications
Candidates must have obtained the following minimum standards at the time of applying:
Junior Certificate (Ordinary Level)
5 Ordinary-Level Grade C’s / 5 Merits or higher in the Junior Certificate (or equivalent) in the following subjects:
Irish or English 2) Mathematics 3) Science* 4) Any 2 other subjects
For Candidates who were due to complete Junior Cert in 2020 and 2021, you will need to get a list of predicted grades from your school to ensure you have the educational requirements to apply
Or
Leaving Certificate
Ordinary-Level Grade D / O6 or higher in the Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) in the following subjects:
Irish or English 2) Mathematics 3) Science Subject (Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physics & Chemistry) 4) Any 2 other subjects
*If you have not obtained the required grade in any of the above Science subjects, the following is acceptable at Leaving Certificate Level (Grade D /O6 or higher at Ordinary Level) : Art, Construction Studies, Design and Communication, Graphics, Engineering, Home Economics, Technical Drawing and Technology.
ESB Apprenticeship Training
The ESB apprenticeship is a 4-year programme combining on-the-job and off-the-job training to complete 7 SOLAS phases.
- Phase 1: On-the job training min (12 weeks)
- Phase 2: Off-the-job training in a SOLAS Training centre (22 weeks)
- Phase 3: On-the-job training min (26 weeks)
- Phase 4: Off-the-job training in an IT College (11 weeks)
- Phase 5: On-the-job training (min 26 weeks)
- Phase 6: Off-the-job training in an IT College (11 weeks)
- Phase 7: On-the-job training min (12 weeks)
You will also complete the following in the National Training Centre in Portlaoise:
- 1st Year: 2 weeks Apprentice Induction & 5 weeks Apprentice Level 1
- 2nd Year: 8 weeks Apprentice Level 2
- 3rd Year: 5 weeks Apprentice Level 3
- 4th Year: 4 weeks Apprentice Level 4
ESB Apprenticeship Recruitment Process
The ESB apprenticeship selection process is usually carried out in two stages:
1) The aptitude tests
After submitting an eligible application candidates are invited to undertake a series of online aptitude tests. In previous campaigns candidates were given a set number of days (usually 5 days) to complete the list of online psychometric assessments.
These assessments have included:
- Personality Questionnaire
- Understanding of instructions (verbal comprehension)
- Mechanical & technical understanding
- Spatial reasoning
- Logical reasoning
- Numeracy
2) Interview
Successful candidates at the aptitude tests stage will be invited to sit an interview.
This popular apprenticeship means that the selection process is competitive. There is a high volume of applicants each year and in order to progress to the interview stage candidates must perform well at the aptitude tests.
