Garda Fitness Test

Stage 3 Garda Fitness Test / Physical Competency Test

All Garda applicants will undergo a Fitness Test and Physical Competence Test as part of the Garda recruitment application process and their subsequent training. Prospective Garda candidates must undergo a bleep test / shuttle run. This involves running continuously between two points 20 metres apart at a set time that gradually decreases until the candidates cannot keep up the intervals. They will also be required to a competency based timed circuit.

Components of the Garda Fitness Test

20 Metre Multi Stage Fitness Test & Muscular Endurance Test:

Running continuously between two points 20 metres apart at a set time that gradually decreases until the candidates cannot keep up the intervals.

Candidates must to run repeatedly between two points 20m apart in a set time with a single score requirement of 5.6, regardless of age and gender and that varying standards for male, female, younger and older candidates will be replaced with a single standard for all candidates. 

Physical Competence Test

The test consists of the following:

  • A competency based timed circuit (2 laps)
  1. Sprint start
  2. Weave through cones
  3. Walk along a balance beam
  4. Lift a car wheel and carry it 3 metres
  5. Go underneath a barrier
  6. Jump over a mat (one metre wide)
  7. Drag a 45kg mannequin 2 metres
  8. Run up and down a stairs
  9. Climb over a gate
  10. Sprint 10 metres
  11. Complete circuit 2 times in fastest time possible.
