Garda Interview Questions and Competencies

Understand the types of questions you may face and how the interview works

The Garda interview is competency-based. This means that candidates are expected to demonstrate relevant qualities and behaviours using evidence from their own experience.

Preparing effectively involves much more than reading a list of possible Garda interview questions. You need to identify suitable experiences, understand which competency they demonstrate and communicate your evidence clearly within the available time.

This guide introduces the general interview format, the competency areas and a selection of independently written Career Services practice questions.

Preparation plays a key role in interview performance. Candidates need to understand the competency being assessed, select examples that provide the right evidence and communicate that evidence clearly within the available time.

A candidate may have strong experience and still underperform if the example chosen is not well suited to the competency or if the relevant evidence is difficult for the board to identify.

What are Garda competency-based interview questions?

Competency-based interview questions ask candidates to draw on genuine situations from their own lives.

Rather than simply saying that you are responsible, resilient or good at communicating, you may need to discuss an occasion when your behaviour demonstrated that quality.

Questions may explore how you have:

  • Communicated with or supported another person
  • Taken responsibility or exercised authority
  • Maintained standards and completed important work
  • Used information to resolve an issue
  • Remained effective during difficult circumstances

Your examples may come from employment, education, volunteering, sport, community involvement, caring responsibilities or other genuine areas of responsibility.

The important issue is not simply whether you have experienced a relevant situation. The experience must provide appropriate evidence for the competency being assessed.

Garda interview sample questions

The following sections introduce five competency areas associated with Garda interview preparation. The questions on this page have been independently written by Career Services. They are not official questions obtained from An Garda Síochána, publicjobs or an interview board.

Interpersonal Skills and Service Ethos

Sample Garda interview question:

Have you ever had to support someone who was going through a difficult time?

A candidate may have several genuine experiences that appear relevant. The challenge is determining which experience demonstrates the competency most clearly.

Exercising Authority

Sample Garda interview question:

Can you tell us about a time when you had to take charge of a task or situation and make decisions on your own?

An example involving responsibility will not necessarily demonstrate exercising authority. The experience must suit the particular competency and question being assessed.

Conscientiousness

Sample Garda interview question:

Have you ever faced a situation that involved an urgent deadline?

The existence of a deadline alone may not provide enough evidence. The candidate must choose an experience that allows the relevant behaviours to be demonstrated.

Using Information and Problem Solving

Sample Garda interview question:

What would you do if you could not resolve an issue and no manager or supervisor was present?

Questions in this area may explore how a candidate approaches an issue when the answer is not immediately obvious.

Resilience

Sample Garda interview question:

Can you give an example of a time when you had to work in demanding conditions?

A difficult situation is not automatically a strong resilience example. The experience must allow the candidate to demonstrate how they remained effective.
